Joan Johnson

H. Joan Johnson, 87, of McPherson, Kansas, passed away at 2:25 p.m., Thursday, July 23rd, 2015 surrounded by her family, at the Cedars House. Joan was born on her parents farm in rural Conway, Kansas, on March 19, 1928, daughter of Mildred Victoria (Nelson) and Harry Ruben Larson.Joan attended Castle Hill country school and graduated from Marquette High School, Marquette, Kansas in 1946. She then attended Bethany College, Lindsborg, Kansas for 3 years. She was Baptized at Elim Lutheran Church, Marquette, Kansas on June 23, 1928 by Dr. Dorf and confirmed on May 23, 1943.She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church McPherson, Kansas where she was a member of the Women's Guild. Joan taught the 2nd grade at Marion, Kansas for a year and the 1st grade at Marquette, Kansas prior to becoming a homemaker. Joan took great pride in providing for her family in this manner. She worked for her husband at his office during the last two years of his medical practice. Joan was a member of Progressive Literature Club for 50 years and Chapter AY P.E.O. for over 50 years, and also Wednesday and Thursday Bridge Club. Joan loved to travel in the motor home, take cruises, traveled around the world twice, visited the Holy Land, and her favorite hobby was reading. Joan always started and ended her day by reading her bible. Joan Larson was united in marriage to John Richard 'Dick' Johnson on May 21, 1951 at Elim Lutheran Church, Marquette, Kansas. The couple started together in Lawrence, Kansas where Dick was finishing his education. In 1952 they moved to Kansas City, Kansas until 1957 when they moved to Oxnard, California for two years. In 1959 they moved to McPherson, Kansas where they lived and raised their family. Surviving family members include her devoted husband of over sixty-four years, Dr. J. Richard 'Dick' Johnson, of McPherson, Kansas; her children, Kathryn 'Kathy' Hawkinson and her husband Griff, Kristin 'Kristy' Schmidt and her husband George, Richard K. 'Rick', Johnson and his wife Patty, all of McPherson, Kansas, and Kimberly 'Kim', Fritzie and her companion Don Conrad, of Stilwell, Kansas; her 9 grandchildren, Ingrid Marcellino-Ousdahl and her husband Bryan, Dr. Thomas Marcellino and his wife Whitney, Tucker Hawkinson, Tanner Hawkinson and his wife Crystal, Joshua Johnson, Alexandria Schmidt, Anastasia Schmidt, Whitney Fritzie and Matthew Fritzie,; her 4 great-grandchildren, Larson Marcellino, Thomas Marcellino, Colton Ousdahl and Adam Ousdahl; several nieces and nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.Joan was preceded in death by her parents Harry R. Larson and Mildred Larson; and her brothers, James Harris Larson and Kenneth G. Larson. Visitation will be held on Monday, July 27, 2015 from 4 to 7 with family present from 5 to 7 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, McPherson. The memorial service will be at Trinity Lutheran Church, McPherson, Kansas, at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 28th, 2015 with The Reverend Tim Leaf officiating. Private family burial will be at the Lutheran Cemetery Marquette, Kansas. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church or the McPherson Public Library and they can be sent in care of the Glidden - Ediger Funeral Home; 222 West Euclid Street; McPherson, Kansas 67460.
