Gerald Lee Winslow

Gerald Lee Winslow, 83, of McPherson, Kansas, passed away at 4:49 p.m., Wednesday, March 23rd, 2016 while in the company of family members, at his home. Gerald Lee Winslow, the son of Forrest William “Hap” and Estelle Lee (Thompson) Winslow, was born April 9, 1932 at Esbon, Kansas. He was one of five children born to this union, three sons and two daughters, Robert, Gerald, Carroll, Dorothy, and Elaine. Gerald attended grade school in Esbon until 1940’s when economics played a factor and the family moved to Marion where he continued his education. In 1943, the family moved to McPherson where Gerald continued his education and his dad, Hap, went to work for the Buick garage before working for the Nash Automobile Dealership. Gerald loved to work on cars both as an occupation and as a hobby. He left school and joined his father as a mechanic and body man at Winslow and Son Motor Company, Nash Dealership in 1946. Winslow and Son Motor Company is still continuing as a father and son business with Bruce’s son, Caleb joining Bruce this summer. Gerald entered into the United States Army in 1953 and was honorably discharged in 1955, serving during the Korean War. Gerald was united in marriage to Marilyn Fern Bruce on March 28, 1955 at Franklin, Nebraska. The young couple established their first home together in McPherson, Kansas. This union was blessed with the birth of five children, four sons and one daughter, Lee, Rick, Jim, Rene, and Bruce. Gerald was a former member of the Horseless Carriage Club of Hutchinson, Kansas, the Wheat Heritage Threshing Club of Goessel, and Veterans of Foreign Wars post 2715 of McPherson, Kansas. Gerald was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and dear friend. He was a man of principal and his wise counsel, knowledge about machines and mechanics, and gracious smile will be missed by those who knew and loved him. He was very proud of his children and always wanted the best for them. He was especially fond of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, always looking forward to their visits and times they would share together. He was very good working with his hands and had the mind to be able to create just about anything. His knowledge on American made automobiles was a recourse many friends and compadres relied on. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hap and Estelle; his wife Marilyn, a son Lee Allen Winslow, a daughter Fern Rene Korbe, and a brother Robert Eugene Winslow; brother-in-law; Verlyn Bruce, and sister-in-law, Donna Earnest. He is survived by his children Rick Winslow and his wife Deanna, of Marquette, Kansas, James “Jim” Winslow, of McPherson, Kansas; and Bruce Winslow and his wife Janell, of Moundridge, Kansas; his son-in-law, Norman Korbe, of McPherson, Kansas; his siblings, Carroll D. Winslow, of McPherson, Kansas, Dorothy Mae Meltzer, of McPherson, Kansas, and Pearl Elaine Crippen and her husband Bill, of Grain Valley, Missouri; his 11 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren with one on the way!, other relatives and a host of friends. Friends are invited to call on Sunday, March 27, 2016 from 3 to 5 p.m. at Glidden - Ediger Chapel, McPherson. The funeral service will be held at Glidden - Ediger Chapel, McPherson, Kansas, at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 28th, 2016 with Pastor Terry Post, Pastor of the Wheatland Baptist Church and Pastor Tom Griffith, Pastor of the Free Methodist Church officiating. Special music “These Hands”, “Amazing Grace”, and “Daddy’s Hands” will be played. The final resting place will be at the McPherson Cemetery, McPherson, Kansas with Pastor Shawn Giesel, Pastor of the Meridian Mennonite Church officiating. Special music will be sung by members of the Meridian Mennonite Church.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Good Shepherd Hospice of Wichita, Kansas and they can be sent in care of the Glidden - Ediger Funeral Home; 222 West Euclid Street, McPherson, Kansas 67460.
