Stanley Leo Schrag

Stanley (Stan) Leo Schrag, 88, passed away April 20, 2019, 16 days following the passing of the love of his life. He was born at his maternal grandparents home 5 miles west and ¾ mile south of Moundridge on November 30, 1930 to Philip Eugene and Olga Rena (Waltner) Schrag. The family moved to Copeland, Kansas, although returned to the Burton, Kansas area after his father contracted dust pneumonia. He attended school in Burton till his freshman year of high school when he transferred to Moundridge graduating in the class of 1948. He was baptized at Eden Mennonite Church and later joined St. John's Lutheran Church in Moundridge where he remained a member. Dad was always a hard worker always helping someone that needed a hand refusing payment. Many a person passing through Moundridge, down on their luck, was sent to the Schrag household and were given a ride, bus ticket, sandwich or money. Stan attended Bethel College one year and was unable to return due to lack of funds. He was although, able to borrow $2000.00 from the credit union, purchase a 1951 Dodge farm truck and went to work for Bill Kaufman hauling lime. Many a hour was spent in his truck or inside Bills Crane unloading lime from freight cars. During the lunch hour, he would dine at the A&B Grill in Moundridge where he met a waitress, who would become the love of his life. He and Roberta "Bert" Vogts were married May 2, 1954 at Immanuel Lutheran Church rural Canton. After the reception they took off in his parents car to Marvel Cave with $54.00 and returned home with most of it. Mom died April 4, 28 days before they could celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary. Their 1st residence was above Orth's Drug Store and in January 1957 they purchased a home at 101 East Krehbiel and rented the upstairs bedrooms for $1.00 per day. He and mom were a team and started their business (Schrag Builders and Electrical) in 1963 with a $500 loan and purchased a table saw and joiner which he still used. Dad did the physical work and mom ran her portion of the business from the kitchen table. Stan was a Korean and Vietnam vet, enlisting in the Army in 1955 and later transferring to the National Guard retiring as 1st Lieutenant in 1990. During the Vietnam War, he was once again called to active duty and closed their business, although when he returned home a few years later, hit the ground running. He and Bert encouraged their kids to do their best and always give a helping hand to those in need. They were always just a phone call away to help their children with only one question, "When do you need us there?" Dad was very musical which many people were unaware playing the cornet and steel guitar when he was younger. He was also athletic and told many stories of a group of guys going to the reformatory in Hutchinson and play baseball with the inmates. God, Country, Family, was the motto in the household as Stan was very active in the church, military and government. He held various offices in church, commander Rosser C. Frasier post #340, past president of the 5th district American Legion, Mid Ks Credit Union board 42 years, Moundridge councilman 3 terms, Founding member of the Moundridge Recreation Commission, Founding member of the Moundridge Jaycees, Lutheran Layman’s League (where he set up the booth at the state fair over 20 years), Board member of the McPherson County Court house restoration, Moundridge ambulance in the late 60's early 70's, Volunteer policeman in the 70"s. Stan is survived by sons Jimmy and Janet Schrag, Moundridge, Todd Schrag and Michael Lovitt, Lincoln, NE, grandson Christopher Summers, Nashville, TN, daughter Tammy and granddaughter Katie Giroux Greeley, CO. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife Roberta "Bert", grandson Trevor Giroux, brother Arlis Schrag and sister in law Delma Powers. Military honors will be held at Wednesday April 24, 2019 1:00 P.M. at the Mound Township Cemetery with a memorial service at 2:30 P.M. at the West Zion Mennonite Church, Moundridge. Visitation and viewing will be held from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm, at Moundridge Funeral Home, with family greeting friends from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
