Ruth Campbell

Ruth M. Campbell was born in rural Bartlett, in South East KS, August 22, 1917. Her parents were Bertha M. and Nate E. Vandermark. Her husband Bennie Waldo Campbell and her parents precede her in death. Ruth is survived by her daughter, Connie L. Kramer and Robbie Dreier of rural Hesston, KS., her grandson, Tim Kramer of Blue Springs, MO., granddaughter Chris Kramer of Kansas City, MO., and great granddaughters Delaney and Hailee Kramer of Blue Springs, MO. She passed quietly at the age of 96 at Newton Presbyterian Manor on April 9, 2014. Ruth graduated from Altamont High School in 1935. After graduation, she lived on the family farm and in southern California before moving to Detroit, MI. in 1939. She went to work for the Army as a civilian as an assistant to a Lieutenant Colonel preparing papers for soldiers being sent overseas. In June of 1940, Ruth rode the train from Oswego, KS, to Reno, NV to marry Bennie. They met while Bennie worked on her father’s farm. It was a long courtship, but Bennie prevailed. They lived in Lake Tahoe, CA. where Bennie worked in a gold mine and they lived in a log cabin campground owned by the mining company. They returned to Kansas in the mid 40’s. In 1952, Ruth and Bennie moved to Kansas City and lived there for more than 30 years. Ruth was a cherished friend by many and a faithful member of the Ruskin Heights Baptist Church and was a member of the Eastern Star. Ruth was an accomplished seamstress and made most of her own clothing. She loved singing & playing the piano and organ and would pass many evenings away playing songs from the 30’s. She loved beautiful flowers and a nice yard. You could always find her out working in the yard with her wide brimmed hat and gardening gloves. She was a devoted and loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and will be deeply missed. Memories of shared fun times, encouragement, pep talks, bolstering & support, secrets and most of all unconditional love will never be forgotten. A memorial service will be held Thursday April 17, 2014 at 2pm at the Highland Trinity UCC Church 8322 N. Anderson Rd.
