LTC (Retired) H. Wayne Rettig, 68, died December 14, 2018 at his home in Haven. He was born July 21, 1950 in Henderson, Kentucky, the son of Howard and Opal Cooper Rettig. He graduated from Henderson County High School, received his bachelor’s from Pittsburg State University, and his Masters of Education from Boston University. He served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army from 1973 – 1994, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. He worked as a US Army Contractor from 1994 until his passing. Wayne worked for Camber Corp. (Huntington Ingalls Industries), and worked on the Hercules M88A2 program. Wayne’s accomplishments included the legion of merit, bronze star medal, defense meritorious service medal, meritorious service medal, Army Commendation Medal with 2 bronze oak Leaf Clusters, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal with 1 Bronze Service Star, Southwest Asia Service Medal with 3 Bronze Service Stars, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Army Service Ribbon with Numeral 2, Kuwait Liberation Medal, and the Sharpshooter Bade with Rifle Bar. He was an amazing man who loved his family dearly. He spent time volunteering for the Girls Scouts, American Red Cross, Haven Food Bank, and the Army Community Service. He attended Grace Life Church, Haven. Wayne married Sue Hale on June 14, 1969 in Haven. She survives. Other survivors include his mother, Opal Rettig, Graham, NC; daughters, Shelli Rettig, Haven and Shannin (Chad Mathis) Rettig, Haven; brother, David (Phyllis) Rettig, Blacksburg, Virginia; sister, Jackie Rettig, Graham, NC; grandchildren, Killian and Madelynn Brown, Lawrence, KS; God-daughter, Crystal (Hale) Kohl, Buhler; and many, many other loved family members. He was preceded in death by his father, Howard; a daughter, Shawnna Rettig; and a sister, Sharon Logan. Graveside service with military honors will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, December 20, 2018 at Laurel Cemetery, Haven. Visitation will be held from 5-7 pm, Wednesday, December 19, 2018 at Ott Funeral Home, Haven. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to charities Wayne held dearly, the Haven Food Bank or the Ronald McDonald House, both in care of the funeral home.
