Lovella Irene Adrian

Lovella Irene Adrian, 91, of Buhler, Kansas., died October 5, 2018. She was born January 27, 1927 in a farmhouse. She was raised on a farm several miles NE of Buhler. Lovella was the oldest of 4. Floyd, Elma, and Evelyn were her younger siblings. She attended Lake Valley Country School in McPherson county, a one room school. When she first went to grade school, she did not speak English because her parents had spoken only low German at home. She was challenged to learn English very quickly. She liked the outdoors and enjoyed riding horses. Farmhouse chores were required, such as cooking, cleaning, milking cows, feeding hogs, gathering eggs, and gardening. When she was 15 years old, she accepted Christ as her Savior and was baptized in Finnamore Lake, becoming a member of the Buhler Mennonite Brethren Church. She graduated from Buhler High School. In 1946 Lovella began a relationship with Elmer V. Adrian, who farmed SE of Buhler. They were married on October 3, 1947. They lived on Elmer's home place and sold cream, eggs and watermelon. The first addition to the family was their daughter, Jean, born in 1948. Darrell was born next in 1952. In 1951, they began a new life - custom harvesting. They harvested grain from Texas to Montana, for 35 years. Lovella was a very skilled homemaker. Aside from housekeeping, laundry and other chores, she cooked for all the crew members plus 4 family members, and took great care to assure the food was good, plentiful, and delivered to the field on time. Evenings were spent cleaning up afterward and planning meals for the next day. She enjoyed this work and full schedule. During the child-raising years, Lovella was a Cub Scout den mother. She also helped with 4H, giving cooking lessons, and was active in helping with church functions. During the later years they traveled in the off-harvest season and after retirement. Their travels took them to 47 states, to South America multiple times, and to Europe. Elmer and Lovella retired from the harvest trail in 1986. After retirement, much time was spent gardening and canning. Lovella was involved with the Red Hat Club and EHU. She was also quite active in making ceramics. In later years, she volunteered to answer the weekend phones at the Sunshine Home. As time went on, their family grew, with 4 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Husband, Elmer V Adrian passed in 2003. Survivors include two children, Jean Olsen; Darrell Adrian and his wife, Holly; a brother Floyd Siemens and sister Elma Jean Brandt and her husband Harold. Also, four grand-children, Jeff Olsen, Kevin Adrian and wife Jennifer, Ryan Adrian and wife Shalane, Ryan Pickett and wife Kristin; and five great-grand children, Kailey, Elyse, Morgan, Brennan and Paige. Joseph McFadden, foster grandson, and special recognition to friend Tina Wright for all of her helpfulness to Lovella over the years. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 13, 2018 at the Sunshine Meadows Retirement Community Chapel, Buhler. Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until service time, at the chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Sunshine Meadows Retirement Community, in care of Buhler Mortuary.
