Judy A. Michels

Judith Ann “Judy” Michels, 82, of Buhler, Kansas, passed away on Friday, July 25, 2025, at Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital in Wichita. She was born on June 28, 1943, in Hutchinson, Kansas, to Ernest I. and Elma A. (Duerksen) Schroeder. She grew up on the family farm two miles north of Buhler. Judy graduated from Buhler High School with the Class of 1961 and later attended Tabor College. For over 25 years, Judy worked as an administrative assistant for Los Alamos National Laboratory in Los Alamos, NM and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, California, before retiring in 2007. Judy enjoyed taking care of her grandkids and traveling during her retirement years living in Las Vegas and Colorado Springs with her daughter, Stacie’s family. In 2017, she returned to Buhler, Kansas, where she became an active member of the Buhler Mennonite Brethren Church, serving on the social committee and participating in many church events. She most recently resided at Newton Presbyterian Manor in Newton, Kansas. Judy was a devoted and loving mother and grandmother. She is survived by her daughter, Stacie, and son-in-law, Cory Borge of Seal Beach, California; grandchildren, Aidan and Ashley Borge; and brothers, Gilbert Schroeder of Inman and Roy Schroeder of Carlsbad, California. She was preceded in death by her parents. Judy had a deep love for animals and delighted in sharing stories and photos of her beloved “pet grandchildren.” She brought joy to others by sharing stories of their silly antics that she loved so much. She especially enjoyed traveling to California to visit Stacie and her family and cherished those frequent vacations. A lover of board and card games, Judy brought her own flair to every game night—often adding her own rules, a cherished Schroeder family tradition. Her quick wit and infectious sense of humor made everyone feel at ease and enjoy her presence. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of life service will be held at Buhler Mennonite Brethren Church on Saturday, October 18th at 11 a.m. in Buhler, KS.
