Buck D. Stewart

South Hutchinson - Buck D. Stewart, age 81, passed away March 28, 2015, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. He was born September 18, 1933, at Arlington, Kansas, the son of Clifford and Helen Stewart. In 1951, he enlisted in the U. S. Army at age 17, to join the military fighting in the Korean War. In 1953, just before the peace treaty was signed ending the war, he was seriously wounded and spent a month in a military hospital before being sent home. He was injured while rescuing one of his platoon members who had been wounded, trying to bring him back to safety, all of this while under enemy fire. For this, he was awarded the purple heart and also the bronze star for bravery. Sergeant First Class Stewart was discharged from the Army in 1954. Back in civilian life, he spent five years working for the Hutchinson Fire Department. He then went to work for Panhandle Eastern Pipeline, where he worked until his retirement. He served on the Haven City Council for two terms and also served as President of the local Lions Club. He was a member of Haven Baptist Church, where he served as head usher for many years. He obtained his pilot’s license and enjoyed many hours of flying, eventually in his own airplane. He is survived by his two children, Jon R. (Zeb) Stewart, Derby, KS and Sandra Stewart, Gardner, KS, four grandchildren, Alison Stewart, Wichita, Kellen Stewart, Manhattan, Micah (Mary) Reece, Overland Park and Jeremiah Reece, Pittsburg, two great-grandchildren, Jack Wylie and Westin Wylie, sister, Barbara (Merle) Hamilton, brothers Larry (Sallie) Stewart and Ted (Bobbie) Stewart. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Daryl D. Stewart and sister, Darlene McCurry. Funeral service will be held at the Haven Baptist Church at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, April 2, with Pastor Blake Alling and Pastor Marvin Valdois officiating. Burial will be in Laurel Cemetery with military rites conducted by Ft. Riley Honor Guard. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m., with family present from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, April 1, 2015 at Ott Funeral Home, Haven. Memorials may be sent to Haven Baptist Church or Hospice House in care of Ott Funeral Home, Haven.
