Donald Max Henry

Donald Max Henry, 94, of McPherson, Kansas, passed away at 10:24 a.m., Monday, September 29, 2014 while in the company of family members, at the Cedars Health Care Center, McPherson, Kansas. Donald was born on the family farm, outside McFall, Missouri on February 3, 1920, a son of Etta Marie (McMillen) and Richard Lloyd Henry.He attended Red Star and Grandview Schools and graduated from Grandview High School, all of Gentryville, Missouri. He then attended Aircraft and Engine School at Sheppard Field, Texas.Donald was a current member of Trinity Lutheran Church of McPherson, Kansas where he served in various positions. He was a former member of the First English Lutheran Church in Great Falls, Montana where he was baptized at age 26.He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II, and later the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. He received the Bronze Star and 15 different service ribbons, and retired at the rank of Chief Master Sergeant.Following his military service Donald worked for Johns-Manville of McPherson, Kansas, and the U.S. Postal Service in Hutchinson and McPherson, Kansas. Other jobs that he held throughout his life include being a farmer, Base Exchange Dairy in Fort Huachuca, Arizona, U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1945, and U.S. Air Force Aircraft Mechanic from 1942 to 1971. Donald was a member of the McPherson Lions Club, charter member of the McPherson Optimist Club, McPherson Elks Lodge, National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE), Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #2715. He was known for and loved repairing and building clocks, making stained glass, and all kinds of popcorn to share with friends and neighbors.On December 7, 1945, Donald Max Henry was united in marriage to Bonnie Heline Peterson at Lindsborg, Kansas. Bonnie passed away on November 11, 2009. He is survived by his children: Donna, wife of Carol Swenson, McPherson,Kansas; Richard 'Dick', husband of Tracy Henry, Leawood, Kansas; his grandchildren Ryan Chambers, Erin Swenson-Reinhold, and Jenna Wolf; his great grandchildren, Brendan Chambers, Samuel, Ephraim and Emma Swenson-Reinhold, Caleb and Paiton Wolf; Brother-in-law Chet Houghton; nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents, Etta Marie and Richard Lloyd Henry; his wife, Bonnie H. Henry, one brother, Rex Henry, and sister-in-law, Judy Henry.The funeral service will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, McPherson, Kansas, at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 4th, 2014 with the Reverends Tim Leaf, Chris Whitacre, and Nathan Swenson-Reinhold officiating.Friends are invited to call from 12:00-2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 4th, 2014, at the Trinity Lutheran Church, McPherson, Kansas. Final Resting Place will be at Elmwood Cemetery, Lindsborg, Kansas.
