Adam B. Opat

Adam B. Opat, 86, of McPherson, Kansas, passed away at 9:18 p.m., Friday, February 20th, 2015 while in the company of family members at his home. Adam Bernard Opat, the son of Martin and Freida Mary (Newman) Opat, was born on November 13, 1928 at Salina, Ks. He was one of nine children born to this union, Andrew (Andy), Joseph (Joe), Leo, Edward (Ed), Adam, Thomas (Tommy, John (Johnny), James (Jimmy) and Martin Jr. He attended the Lindsborg school district, Lindsborg, Ks.Adam B. Opat was united in marriage to Bertha Ann Everhart on August 16, 1947 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in McPherson. Adam and Ann lived their entire married life in the McPherson community and were longtime parishioners of the St. Joseph Catholic Church. They raised five children: Steven, Michael, Mary Ruth, Julie Jo Ann, and Susan. He was a devoted father to these children and a loving grandfather to seventeen grandchildren and thirty-one great grandchildren. He spent his life caring for his wife and constant companion, Ann, and his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Adam took the greatest of pride in his faith and family. Adam was a operator #1 in the feed unit and worked for the National Cooperative Refinery Association. He also worked part-time for the Smith Motors and Implement, Peter's Lumber Company, both in McPherson and Moridge in Moundridge, Ks. through the years. He was a member of Oil Chemical and Atomic Workers Union. Adam enjoyed his family, fishing, working and tinkering in his garage on mowers and bicycles. He liked to help others, assisted in building houses and remodeling for his family, and shared many interests with his wife and children. Adam also worked hard to get the Cross from the old church into the Sanctuary of the new church. Adam B. Opat, 86, of McPherson, Ks., passed away at 9:18 p.m., Friday, February 20th, 2015 at his home surrounded by his children and grandchildren. He will be missed for his wit and humor, his strength of character, and his selfless devotion to his family. May he rest in peace, with his parents Martin and Freida, his wife Ann, his son, Michael, his great-granddaughter Peyton Lee Welch, his brothers, Andrew “Andy”, Thomas “Tommy”, Joseph, John “Johnny”, and Leo Opat and all who preceded him in death.Adam is survived by his children, Steven Opat and his wife Maria, of Junction City, Ks., Mary Busch and her husband Jody, of McPherson, Ks., Julie Kornelson and her husband Phil, of McPherson, Ks., and Susan Hart, of Manhattan, Ks., a daughter-in-law Nita (Opat) Grandstaff; his brothers, Edward 'Eddie' Opat and his wife Marilyn, of Lindsborg, Ks., James 'Jimmy' Opat and his wife Claudia, of Salina, Ks., and Martin 'Junior' Opat and his wife Nancy, of Salina, Ks.; his sister-in-laws, Carol Ruth Ek, of McPherson, Kansas and Darlene Everhart, of McPherson, Ks.; brother-in-laws, Dwight Everhart, of Canton, Ks. and Charles Robert Everhart, of Herrington, Ks.; 17 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.Friends are invited to call on Wednesday, February 25th, 2015 from 6 to 7 p.m. with the Rosary at 7:15 p.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, McPherson, Kansas. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, McPherson, Kansas, at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, February 26th, 2015 with Fr. Paul Oborny officiating. The final resting place will be at the McPherson Cemetery McPherson, Kansas.
